Peacock Butterfly - Mosaic on Marine ply wood approx 130cm x 100cm

This piece is suitable for inside or outside, it is waterproofed with grout and has layers of yacht varnish to protect it.

The Peacock butterfly is an ancient creature and native to this country, butterflies symbolise transformation, immortality and beauty arising out of apparent death ( the seemingly lifeless cocoon).

Before I made the piece I researched the design and patterns found, by drawing and planning exactly the way I wanted to use mosaic tesserae to capture it's majestic beauty. I cut out the shape and sculpted the body in 3D using vintage black brass buttons and other pieces to give the butterfly an essence of being ancient, from a time before. The orange vitreous glass has a sheen in the glaze and gives a different colour tone in different light.  I am really pleased with this piece, I kept a diary of the time that it took to make..which was 90 hours over a period of six weeks. I have entered it in art exhibitions and it is for sale.

This piece is £1450
